DJI Live Bridge

Spot and count animals live from your DJI drone

DJI Live Bridge can now look at your drone's live picture for you. AI Vision finds goats, sheep, cattle, horses, donkeys, poultry and other animals, draws a labelled box around each one on your stream and the virtual camera, and keeps a count. It runs on your own computer; no picture or result is sent anywhere.

In short

  • Turn on AI Vision · Animal Detection on the Go live tab and the app marks every animal it finds with a box and a label such as Goat #12 85%.
  • It knows 15 kinds of animal, farm animals first: goat, sheep, cow, horse, donkey, dog, cat, chicken, duck, goose, pig, deer, wild boar, bird and bear.
  • A counter shows how many animals are in the picture now and how many different ones it has seen.
  • Everything runs on your computer. The model is downloaded once; after that nothing leaves the machine.
  • The drone video is never slowed down. On a Mac the default model checks the picture about once or twice a second, which suits grazing herds.

What AI Vision does

When you fly over a pasture, counting the herd or finding the one goat behind a bush is hard on a small controller screen. AI Vision does the looking: it checks the live picture over and over, once or twice a second with OWLv2 and up to ten times a second with the lighter models, and marks each animal it recognises.

AI Vision only adds a layer on top of the picture. The drone video itself is never held back to wait for the analysis.

Which animals it recognises

Most ready-made detection models are trained on the same public photo collections, and those have no goat at all. A goat comes out as a sheep, or as nothing. That is why the default model on a Mac is OWLv2, a model that is told by name which animals to look for.

ModelAnimalsSpeed on a MacDownload
OWLv2 (default on Mac)Goat, sheep, cow, horse, donkey, dog, cat, chicken, duck, goose, pig, deer, wild boar, birdAbout 0.5 s per picture586 MB
D-FINE X, RF-DETR LargeSheep, cow, horse, dog, cat, bird, bearAbout 0.1–0.2 s per picture240–464 MB
YOLOX (Nano to X)Sheep, cow, horse, dog, cat, bird, bearFastest; Nano, Tiny and S also run on Windows3–378 MB

You can switch models under Detection settings → Model; the list shows how many species each one knows. For mixed herds of goats and sheep, use OWLv2. For cattle and horses only, D-FINE X is about five times faster. Under Detected species you can limit the search to the animals you care about.

Wild savanna animals such as giraffes, zebras and elephants are not in the list on purpose: over a herd of cattle they only produced false alarms.

How to turn on animal detection

  1. Connect your droneSend the live picture from DJI Fly to the app over RTMP as usual; the address is on the Go live tab. The details are in the DJI Fly RTMP guide.
  2. Switch on AI VisionOn the Go live tab, find the AI Vision · Animal Detection card and turn on Animal detection.
  3. Let it download and prepare the modelThe first time, the model is downloaded and prepared for your computer. With OWLv2 this can take several minutes; the card shows the progress. Later starts take about a minute.
  4. Set the thresholdDrag Confidence threshold down to about 0.25–0.35 for shots from the air, where animals are small. Raise it if you see boxes on bushes or rocks.
  5. Go liveStart the broadcast or the virtual camera. If you were already live, the boxes join the stream the next time you start it; the virtual camera shows them right away.

Questions

Can my DJI drone count animals?

The drone itself does not, but with DJI Live Bridge on your computer the live picture from DJI Fly is analysed there: each animal gets a box and a label, and a counter shows how many are visible and how many different ones were seen.

Does it recognise goats?

Yes, with the OWLv2 model, the default on a Mac. It tells goats from sheep at normal flying heights. The other models have no goat class at all.

Do the boxes appear on my Instagram, TikTok or YouTube stream?

Yes. They are drawn into every output: the live stream to all destinations, the virtual camera and the in-app preview. You can switch the boxes or the counter off at any time.

Is my video sent to an AI service?

No. Everything runs on your own computer. Only the model file is downloaded once, from a public source, and it is checked before use.

Does it slow down my stream?

No. The video keeps its frame rate; the analysis runs beside it and the boxes are updated whenever a new result is ready.

How accurate is the count?

Good for an overview of a herd, not a certified census. Very distant animals may get the wrong species, and an animal that leaves the picture and comes back can be counted twice.

Is it free?

Yes. AI Vision is part of DJI Live Bridge, which is free and open source under the MIT licence. The models are released under the Apache 2.0 licence.

Try it with your drone

DJI Live Bridge is free and open source, for macOS and Windows. FFmpeg is built in, so there is nothing else to install.
