Why DJI Fly can't live stream to Instagram (and the fix)
Paste Instagram's stream URL into DJI Fly and nothing happens. The reason is technical: Instagram only accepts RTMPS, an encrypted connection, and DJI Fly can only send plain RTMP. The fix is a relay that receives DJI Fly's RTMP and forwards it to Instagram over RTMPS — DJI Live Bridge does that on your own computer, for free.
In short
- Instagram's stream URL starts with
rtmps://and uses port 443; DJI Fly's RTMP option cannot open that kind of connection. - DJI Fly does not list Instagram among its platforms, and Instagram has no setting to accept plain RTMP.
- Instagram also gives a new stream key for every broadcast and expects vertical video.
- Fix: DJI Fly → RTMP → DJI Live Bridge on your computer → RTMPS → Instagram, in vertical 1080×1920.
- Without a computer, the Android app Stream My Drone does the same with a DJI RC 2.
Why it does not work
- Encryption. Instagram's stream URL looks like
rtmps://edgetee-upload-….fbcdn.net:443/rtmp/. The s means the video must travel inside an encrypted (TLS) connection. DJI Fly's RTMP client sends unencrypted RTMP only, so Instagram never accepts the connection. - No built-in Instagram option. DJI Fly lists RTMP (and on some controllers other regional platforms) under Live Streaming Platforms, but not Instagram.
- Single-use keys. Instagram creates a new stream key for every live video, so a key saved in DJI Fly stops working after one broadcast.
- Vertical video. Instagram is watched in portrait; a landscape drone picture needs reshaping to look right.
None of this is a fault in your drone or your account. The two systems simply speak different versions of the same protocol.
The fix: relay DJI Fly's stream through DJI Live Bridge
DJI Live Bridge runs a small RTMP server on your Mac or PC. DJI Fly streams to it over your local network; the app re-encodes the picture as vertical 1080×1920 and sends it to Instagram over RTMPS.
- Install DJI Live BridgeDownload it for macOS or Windows. It is free and needs nothing else installed.
- Send the drone to your computerPut the controller and computer on one Wi-Fi or hotspot. In DJI Fly open GO FLY → ••• → Transmission → Live Streaming Platforms → RTMP and enter the address the app shows.
- Create the live video on InstagramOn instagram.com click Create (+) → Live video and copy the stream URL and stream key.
- Add Instagram in the appPaste both into an Instagram destination, keep Vertical 9:16 on and press START LIVE.
- Press Go live on InstagramInstagram's window shows the drone picture; press Go live there to make the broadcast public.
Every detail of the Instagram side, including the key that changes each time, is in the Instagram guide.
Other ways around it
| Option | Cost | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| DJI Live Bridge (Mac, Windows) | Free, open source | Runs on your computer; video never passes through a third-party server; several platforms at once. |
| Stream My Drone (Android) | One-time purchase | Replaces the computer when you fly with the DJI RC 2; forwards to RTMPS destinations. |
| Cloud restreaming service | Usually a subscription | DJI Fly streams to the service, which forwards to Instagram; check that your plan allows custom RTMP destinations. |
| HDMI controller + capture card + OBS | Hardware cost | Needs a controller with HDMI output (such as the DJI RC Pro) and a capture card. |
Still not live?
- No Live video under Create on instagram.com: Instagram has not enabled the option for that account yet.
- Connection failed right away: the key was already used. Open a new live video and update the key.
- Instagram's preview stays black: check that DJI Live Bridge's own preview shows the drone first.
- Followers see nothing: press Go live on Instagram; receiving the stream is not the same as publishing it.
Questions
Why can't DJI Fly stream to Instagram?
Instagram accepts only RTMPS, an encrypted connection, and DJI Fly sends plain RTMP. A relay such as DJI Live Bridge receives the RTMP stream and forwards it to Instagram over RTMPS.
Can I just change rtmps:// to rtmp:// in the Instagram URL?
No. Instagram's ingest servers expect the encrypted connection; an unencrypted RTMP connection is refused.
Do I need OBS to go live on Instagram from a drone?
No. DJI Live Bridge sends the stream to Instagram directly. OBS is only needed if you want its scenes and overlays.
Can I stream to Instagram and TikTok at the same time?
Yes. Add both as destinations in DJI Live Bridge; both expect vertical video, so one setting suits both.
Is it free?
DJI Live Bridge is free and open source. It is not affiliated with DJI or Instagram.
Try it with your drone
DJI Live Bridge is free and open source, for macOS and Windows. FFmpeg is built in, so there is nothing else to install.
